Our winter sports season came to a conclusion last week with both our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams losing the in their respective section tournaments. The Stars boys’ team was riding a seven-game win streak into their game at ACGC High School on Monday. The Stars were the fifth seed in the Section 2A tournament and ACGC was seeded fourth. Southwest came out strong and led most of the first half before ACGC made a run and took a 32-30 lead at the half. It was a back and forth battle in the second half but ultimately the Stars could not overcome a 24-10 foul differential in the game (free throws were 26 for ACGC and six for the Stars) and lost a close game, 70-66. The Stars finished the season with a record of 13-12.
The Lady Stars advanced to the section semifinals last Tuesday against Legacy Christian Academy. Southwest and Legacy had split their two games earlier in the year so a tough battle was expected. The Stars took control of the game early, leading the entire first half and taking a 19-15 into the locker room. Legacy outscored the Stars in the second half 33-20 ending the season for the Stars. The final score was 48-39. The Lady Stars ended the season with a 19-10 record, good for the third most wins in school history.
Seven Southwest Christian High School basketball players were selected by the MCAA coaches as all-conference players. For the Lady Stars, there were Christine Piwinica (1st), Lauren Robertson (2nd), Katie Meinke and Ally Krommendyk (HM). For the guys, Jack Jenson and Luke Johanson (2nd) and Mitchell Petersen (HM) were selected. Congratulations to all of these players!
